Dental Bridges

All of your teeth play an important role in speaking, chewing, and in maintaining proper alignment of other teeth. Tooth loss does not necessarily have to occur as you age. But if you do lose teeth, they must be replaced to maintain proper function of your mouth. It has been scientifically shown that loosing nine teeth ore more for more than nine years will shorten your lifespan. Fortunately, there are options to address tooth loss.

Teeth were designed to complement each other from the top to the bottom as well as from side to side. Increased risk of gum disease has proven to be one of the worst side effects of missing teeth resulting in the loss of additional teeth once the first tooth is lost and not restored. Thankfully that negative impact can be reversed with a bridge. Of course esthetics are significantly compromised when the missing tooth is in the front of the mouth. Missing teeth can cause speech disorders because they are used to make many of the sounds we use to speak clearly.

What is a bridge?

A bridge is a fixed solution where we place a crown on a tooth adjacent to the missing tooth – on each side. These two adjacent crowns are then connected to a third crown for the missing tooth making a three-tooth bridge. This is cemented in place and creates a fixed solution for a missing tooth. This is a three-tooth solution to a one-tooth problem. Some patients prefer the benefits of a single tooth implant to restore a single missing tooth.

Even if you are missing more than one tooth, bridges are still available to you. We may require using more than one tooth on each side of the multiple missing teeth. Once again, dental implants are the most likely alternative to bridges for multiple missing teeth.
